James Turrell’s Roden Crater is a merging of art, architecture, science and travel. Located somewhere northeast of Flagstaff Arizona, the crater is an extinct volcano that has been a work in progress since 1979. Turrell’s created a series of chambers and tunnels that play on the perception of light. Because of its location, there is minimal light pollution. This enhances any celestial events that occur.
Only a handful of privileged individuals have been invited to the site, while many others have gained access by trespassing, documenting their experiences through flickr. An article in Metropolis magazine published in 2000 stated the Roden Crater would open the following year. It did not. NY Times followed up in 2007 claiming the center will open to the public in 2011.
This may be one of the most difficult art destinations in the world. Even after its completion, the chances of reserving a spot to experience the artwork will surely be a challenge.
