I’ve been enjoying scrolling through Aaron Rose’s blog posts. Updated weekly, mostly on Sundays and Mondays, it gives a glimpse into his busy life. Traveling, producing art and music, meeting with friends, installing art shows, and a bit of relaxing. What started out as a weekly account of his life has turned into an abstract collection of photoshopped photos supplemented with one liners or quotes from movies. It’s a nice escape from the overload of information. This week he visits Berlin to help with the installation of Circle Cultures latest show.

The Scout was lucky enough to attend the opening last night of Jenny Holzer’s new solo show PROTECT PROTECT at the Whitney. Despite the current pervasive feeling of economic doom and perhaps the nature of Holzer’s work, the atmosphere was very jovial throughout the exhibits. Holzer’s show is composed of a number of paintings and prints in her ‘Redaction’ series (redacted/transformed government documents) and more noteably a number of large scale LED works. The ‘Stock Ticker’ like installations project words and phrases similar to Holzer’s other works – ‘trueisms’ and government double-talk from the Iraq War. The LED works are beautiful as a pure aesthetic, but taken in the context of the current economic crisis thier image alone evokes something powerful and emotional, regardless of the text.

Though you wouldn’t notice it from looking outside the window yesterday, spring is coming. Along with the change of season comes a gathering of exciting art shows in museums and galleries. It’s still winter but the art fairs have arrived. This weekend will see three of the biggest fairs in the country, where galleries from all over the world will descend upon New York. It is one of the best ways to see the best of contemporary art all under one roof, as a viewer or buyer.
