Since 1975, BMW has been working with artists in creating a series of vehicles known simply as the BMW Art Cars. Beginning with Alexander Calder’s BMW 3.0 CSL, only 16 have been made in the last 30 plus years. Past artists have included Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jenny Holzer. The latest from 2007 by Olafur Eliasson uses BMW’s H2R hydrogen-powered vehicle encased in a steel mesh covered in layers of ice. After making its way from LA County Musem of Art, four of the cars will go on display at the Grand Central Terminal for 3 weeks starting March 25. The participating four cars are by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella and Robert Rauschenberg. Read more about the history of the project here.
