Storm King Wavefield by Maya Lin

This past weekend Storm King opened the latest addition to the sculpture park, Storm King Wavefield created by Maya Lin. This earthwork is the third in a series, and the largest in scale.

The first installation is at the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, where scientifically modeled ocean waves cover a 10,000-square-foot space. The tallest waves measure 6 feet. The second location is at the Federal Courthouse in Miami, Florida. These waves were sculpted at 3 to 4 feet high and mimic the way water molds the sand.

While the two previous works were smaller in scale and created as an intimate experience for visitors, this new earthwork is more epic. Covering 11 acres, it allows visitors to become wrapped in the landscape, and experience the culmination of Lin’s melding of land and water iconography. Undulating forms reach 15 feet high, drawing relevance from the surrounding Catskill mountains.

A special exhibition entitled Maya Lin: Bodies of Water will also be on view at Storm King’s museum building until November 15, 2009.
