The definition of “downtown” can’t be confined to an area on the map when it comes to New York City. It is a word that embodies causing trouble, Warhol, Patti Smith, Basquiat, NoWave, filthy clubs, and dirt-cheap lofts. It symbolizes a wistful longing for an era that was dripping in raw creativity and unstyled-style. For NYC, downtown is more like the Land of Oz, a mythical time and place where everything was just incredibly cool.

Fortunately for us, this photogenic era and it’s cast of characters has been well documented by the likes of Roberta Bayley, Leee Black Childers, and Godlis. Clic Gallery will be featuring their work along with other photographers of the day in BANDE À PART: NEW YORK UNDERGROUND 60s, 70s, 80s. A reception will be held on Saturday, November 14th from 6-9 PM.
