Even as expenses escalate in New York City, artists continue to be creative and resourceful. Just like in dining, theater, and retail, Denise Kupferschmidt and Joshua Smith have organized a series of temporary galleries in apartments or similar settings. Launched in January of this year, Apartment Show’s concept was to create roving art shows in alternative settings, bypassing the conventional gallery system. The exhibition is only on view for an evening and gathers artists that wouldn’t normally show together. Kupferschmidt and Smith prefer not to be called curators opting instead for “artists/organizers” – they see Apartment Show as a project in itself. Even then, Printed Matter has asked the duo to help curate this year’s Giftland exhibition. It opens this Friday, December 4th.
