The current issue of DAMNation has an article on Michael Johansson, a Swedish artist using ordinary objects to create extraordinary works of art. Chaos is transformed into order while the mundane is turned into a thing of beauty. Johansson explores these contradictions by gathering objects and arranging them to color and perfectly interlocking them into place. While many of his sculptures are compact and unified others take on an opposite approach. Broken into pieces and positioned into 1:1 scaled model pieces, it shows a restraint opposition to the compact sculptures. One of the better examples of this is his 1998 sculpture, TOYS’R’US, where components from a life size row boat is held together in one piece. (via Ignant)
