Gasoline Alley

Art

Gasoline Alley is a comic strip that has been in existence for over 90 years. It was created by Frank King in 1918 and is still published today. It originally appeared in the Sunday edition of the Chicago Tribune but grew into a daily strip less than a year later. Gasoline Alley eventually moved over to the New York Daily News due to its popularity. What was, and still is revolutionary about the strip is the evolution of its characters. Unlike other comics or cartoons, the characters aged and participated in historical events and life passages. Chicago cartoonist, Chris Ware was always fond of the series and has accumulated a mini museum of Gasoline Alley memorabilia. Watch a brief interview with Ware and his collection on Chicago Public Radio.
