Joshua Vogel of Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Co.

Joshua Vogel built a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship in furniture design as a co-founder of NYC-based BDDW. Four years ago, he decided to put down new roots upstate, and get back to the origins of his passion for working with wood. Now launching Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Co., he’s focused on creating sculptural wood turnings, limited edition furniture, and meaningful small products. He describes turning wood as meditative, fully devoting himself to his craft in the quietude of the Hudson Valley forest. “On a good day I try to lose myself in the rhythm of the whole process— the spinning wood, the sound and tone of the cut I am making and the resonance of a balanced form”. It is a purely reductive process, requiring vision and foresight to reveal the piece within, and one that he’s been honing over the past 17 years since his time as an architecture student in Oregon. We look forward to visiting his studio in the near future.
