Studio Formafantasma’s 2010 project Autarchy is “an installation that proposes an autonomous way of producing goods.” The studio fabricated a story around a village that imposed an embargo on itself and as a result created functional vessels and lamps out of the simplest materials found. Flour, agricultural waste, and natural limestone were used to make bowls while natural vegetable dyes were used to color them. A baker and a broom maker were also invited to complete the installation thus providing food and tools to the project. The common link that tied everything together was a grain called sorgho, it was used to make everything in the exhibition. In the spirit of open source, the steps that took to make the objects were on display. Autarchy is an examination of self sufficiency and using materials in the most sustainable way. Visit the project’s site for more photos from the installation.
