From magazines, band logos to Gossip Girl, Avant Garde is probably the most popular font Herb Lubalin designed. Fortunately that’s not all Lubalin is known for, his design contributions from the 60s and 70s have proven to be incredibly influential to contemporary designers and artists. Cooper Union recognizes this and has arranged an exhibition titled “Lubalin Now,” featuring designers that explore the use of illustrative and expressive lettering and typography. Designers from the show include Marian Bantjes, Deanne Cheuk, HunterGatherer, Non-Format, Matt Owens, and of course Herb Lubalin. “Lubalin Now” opens Thursday November 5 with a reception from 6-8pm at the new Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography.
