It’s really encouraging to read stories like this. Whether propelled by philosophical or economic reasons victory gardens are on the rise, reports the LA Times. Though difficult in New York, the article examines the growth of community and backyard gardening in this country, by as much as 10% in 2008. An analyst expects the movement to increase even more this year.
During World War II, victory gardens were encouraged by the government to help cope with food shortage, as the result, the success of the gardens produced 8 million tons of food. The end of the war brought a decline to the gardens but eventually came into popularity again in the 70’s. The trend seem to align itself with the economic slowdown. However, people are also more conscious of the source of their food these days. And because of that, victory gardens may surpass the poor economic times and thrive beyond it.
