Dorothy and Herb Vogel at home

Photo: Ben Hoffmann

Herb and Dorothy made its premier in June of this year, a documentary about a couple of art collectors from Manhattan. During the 1960s Herb Vogel, a postal clerk, and Dorothy Vogel, a librarian, started buying minimal and conceptual art from then unknown artists. With their modest income the Vogels lived off of Dorothy’s earnings while all of Herb’s was spent on purchasing art. Throughout the years the couple have amassed over 4,000 pieces. Never willing to sell any of the artwork the Vogels decided to move their collection to the National Museum in 1992.

13 Most Beautiful…

Gary Hustwit (of Helvetica fame) is a busy man. Not only is he currently working on Objectified, pushing make-shift camera carts around Ikea and interviewing design elite, but he’s producing the first ever authorized DVD of Andy Warhol films, 13 Most Beautiful…, a selection from the over 500 part Screen Test series.

The screen tests were shot between ‘64 and ’66 in the Factory and starred both Warhol’s notable friends and anonymous passers-through. Each was shot on 100 feet of 16mm until the film ran out at about 2:35, then screened at silent film speed, lasting 4 minutes. The result is a meditation on each character spanning thousands of frames, a near animation of Warhol’s multiple image pieces.

Dean & Britta (formerly of Luna) were commissioned to compose a soundtrack for the films and began a tour this past weekend, performing alongside projected screen tests of Nico, Lou Reed, Jane Holzer (above with toothbrush), Edie Sedgwick, Dennis Hopper, and others.

The DVD, fully entitled 13 Most Beautiful… Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests, is on pre-sale in both sexy limited-edition LP packaging and hard-cover book variety and is due in January 2009 from Hustwit’s Plexifilm label.
