The Discipline of D.E.

William S. Burroughs and Gus Van Sant crossed paths several times in their careers in the 80’s. Many know about Burroughs’s appearance in Drugstore Cowboy as Tom the Priest. However, few know about Van Sant’s 1982, nine minute short based on Burroughs’s short story, The Discipline of D.E. until recently when Wholphin featured the short in their issue. D.E. or Do Easy is a philosophy of simplifying one’s life by doing the simplest of tasks correctly and effortlessly. In other words, Slow The F Down. It is a good way to start the new year, take things one step at a time, ease through your daily routine with efficiency by following the Discipline of D.E.

A little bit of trivia, the Ace Hotel in Portland is where some scenes of Drugstore Cowboy was shot.
