There are a handful of directors we keep track of, Sofia Coppola being one of them. Her latest film, Somewhere won’t be scheduled for release until December but the anticipation is already brewing. It appears that it will be a part of the Venice festival before it makes it into theaters. Just last week the poster for the film was released through Facebook. It’s not much but it’s something to go on until the trailer is released. Trailer has been released.

Breathless Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo

Photo: Jean-Luc Godard

The three Jeans would make cinema history in 1960 with Jean-Luc Godard’s first film, Breathless starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg. Fifty years later its significance still stands as one of the key films to usher in the French New Wave. The movie excessively bleeds cool, from Seberg’s androgynous hair cut to Belmondo’s perpetual chain smoking – granted it would be different today. How many Belle and Sebastian covers were influence by Breathless and 60s French Cinema? All of them I would argue. This year marks the film’s 50th anniversary, and to celebrate, a 35mm restored version with freshly revised subtitles will be shown at Film Forum starting May 28th for two weeks.

The Thorn in the Heart (L'Epine dans le Coeur)

Every project after Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind appeared to be smaller than the project before for Michel Gondry. Consciously scaling back from bigger productions, Gondry has directed a segment for Tokyo!, an episode for Flight of the Conchords, and a couple of music videos. His latest project is a personal one. The Thorn In The Heart focuses his attention on his aunt Suzette Gondry and the relationship she has with her son Jean-Yves. The trailer proves that Gondry has not abandoned his imaginative approach to directing, he’s incorporated stop motion animation to parts of the film. The documentary is being released under Oscilloscope and will premiere at Village East Cinema on April 2nd. Gondry will return to the big screen with The Green Hornet this year, starring Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz, and Christoph Waltz.

Photo: Spike Jonze

For years we’ve admired the Sundance Film Festival from a distance, reading all the highlights but never having the chance to attend. Well readers… this year’s no different. Sundance starts next Thursday and we’ll be keeping track of the progress from the web, then waiting eight months for the films to be released. But we’re already excited about some of the movies in and out of competition including Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child, Howl, Hesher, and Spike Jonze’s short I’m Here.

Kanye West in We Were Once A Fairytale

Photo: Spike Jonze

Maybe it was the stream of bad press that Kanye West received during the VMA’s that delayed the release of Spike Jonze’s We Were Once A Fairytale. The short, featuring West was originally scheduled for a September 8th release on iTunes. That in fact didn’t happen. Instead, it was posted 18 hours ago on vimeo by M. Fantu. The video has been taken down, however it still can be found on The Week.
