There is a New York City circle that begins and ends with Brooklyn brothers Evan and Oliver Haslegrave (of “hOmE” design firm fame) No one is exactly sure how they met the brothers, but the circle of their influence is ever-widening.

Brooklyn welcomed Dana and me on November 7th, 2004 to a sublet apartment with a sheet-less bed and the haunting noise of radiator piping. We arrived with 2 suitcases and 4 boxes that showcased a new compact lifestyle. With no jobs or friends we set upon an unexpected 4 year love affair with Brooklyn. During that time we moved through jobs, met best friends and collected a lot of “things.”

Communication between friends these days has been reduced to brisk emails, text messages, and IM’s. In spite of these trends, enormouschampion understands the meaning and pleasure of sending a hand written note in a beautifully crafted card. Perhaps it’s because what they create is truly a labor of love.

At the beginning of The Big Lebowski, Sam Elliot’s gravelly voiceover brings the audience into the scene. “Sometimes there a man,” he says, “well, he’s the man for his time and place. He fits right in there.” It turns out, sometimes that man has a brother, and sometimes those brothers start a design firm. That’s the Haslegraves, and the time and place is right now in Greenpoint.

PDT, La Esquina, Milk & Honey…secret bars and restaurants are scattered all over the city. But let’s face it; these unmarked or “underground” places aren’t so secret anymore. In fact, anyplace that doesn’t have a name, a sign, or a phone number instantly becomes the next hot spot.

Ogling the archives at the House Industries studio in pastoral Delaware can only be likened to digging through the crates of a great record collector. All sorts of gems are strewn out across tables and desks as Andy Cruz recalls anecdotes about each one. He pauses on an early inked sketch of a House 33 logo for their UK clothing line and reminisces over their critiques.
