Read MoreThe current music landscape can be a daunting one, considering that any bedroom musician is capable of releasing an album. In these digital times, it’s essential to separate the mountain of bad from the good. Enter Turnatable Lab. Established in 1999 as a website, partners Anthony Cottarina, Jasper Goggins and Peter Hahn launched a successful company based on the basic principle of knowing your products. Specializing in DJ equipment and music, the trio set out to inform customers with in-depth reviews and fair pricing. The success of the site resulted in its first retail outlet in 2001, stocking a sampling of what the site offered but also enabling customers to test the equipment and speak to the knowledgeable staff. The shop followed this concept by adding design into the mix, from clothing to books and magazines, all served with a high dose of humor. Expansion was inevitable. Insufficient space in their small East Village boutique prompted the team to acquire additional space next door; the adjoining Annex now carries their entire non-music inventory overflow.
